Senator Vance Issues Statement on NTSB Findings Regarding East Palestine Train Derailment
Background
On February 3, 2023, a Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, causing a major accident and environmental disaster. The train was carrying hazardous chemicals, including vinyl chloride, which leaked into the air and water, prompting evacuations and health concerns.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been investigating the derailment and recently released its preliminary findings.
Statement from Senator Vance
In response to the NTSB findings, Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) issued the following statement:
"I am deeply concerned by the NTSB's preliminary findings regarding the East Palestine train derailment. This was a preventable tragedy that has had a devastating impact on our community.
The NTSB's findings make it clear that Norfolk Southern failed to properly maintain its tracks and equipment, which led to this derailment. I am committed to holding Norfolk Southern accountable and ensuring that they take the necessary steps to prevent future accidents.
I am also working with my colleagues in Congress to pass legislation that will improve railroad safety and prevent future derailments. We must do everything we can to protect our communities from these dangerous accidents."
Next Steps
The NTSB's investigation is ongoing, and further findings are expected in the coming months.
Senator Vance has pledged to continue working with the NTSB and other stakeholders to ensure that the cause of the derailment is fully understood and that appropriate measures are taken to prevent future accidents.
